The town grew up as a railroad and resort stop in the 1880s, and a lot of that housing is still standing: narrow-lap wood siding, tall window openings, and porches that have been rebuilt more than once. At 7,237 feet the UV load is punishing, and paint film on south and west walls chalks and fails years before the shaded elevations do. House painting on these homes is mostly prep: scrape, spot prime, then two coats.

Homes climbing the slope toward Sundance Mountain and the Star sit in the wildland interface, in gambel oak and ponderosa, with real wind coming down out of the canyons. Decks here take direct snow load, then bake dry the next afternoon. That cycle lifts film finishes off the boards. Deck restoration starts with stripping to bare wood so the new coating anchors.

Newer custom builds around town use hard-coat stucco over foam or lath. At this elevation stucco cracks from thermal movement: forty-degree swings between afternoon sun and overnight low are ordinary here. Stucco repair closes those cracks with a compatible patch, and roof coating takes care of the low-slope sections that hold snowmelt against the parapet.
